The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the excimer laser for the treatment of myopia or nearsightedness in October 1995. Laser Eye Center of Hawaii (LEC) officially opened its doors in February 1996 and was the first center in Hawaii to specialize in laser vision correction services. LEC was first to offer the procedure known as Photorefractive Keratectomy or PRK. In 1997, the first Laser Assisted in-situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) procedure in Hawaii was performed at LEC, and it has since gained popularity as the refractive surgery treatment of choice. Both of these procedures use the precision of the excimer laser and are performed as outpatient procedures.

The Laser Eye Center of Hawaii remains dedicated to offer the state-of-the-art technology and the most up-to-date procedures available to their patients. With the approval of of VISX’s CustomVue Procedure in mid-June 2003, Laser Eye Center of Hawaii became one of the only centers to offer this revolutionary procedure.

Since our inception, over 19,000 procedures have been performed at Laser Eye Center. We can treat nearsightedness with astigmatism, and farsightedness with astigmatism, which enables us to help a wide range of patients reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
