Doug Young, Artist

Doug Young’s background spans from Hawaii, Iowa, New York and to Europe. He grew up in the islands, went to Coe College in Iowa, New York University, and the University of Hawaii.

While in New York, he worked for Ivan Karp at O.K. Harris in Soho and also assisted a handful of artists such as Luis Jimenez, Jr., Elenore Mikus and John Clem Clarke. For two years he was the assistant to the late realist sculptor, Duane Hanson in New York and Germany.

Young has done many solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Some of his public works and commissions include the First Hawaiian Towers on Fort Street Mall, The Estate of James Campbell – Executive Offices in Kapolei, The Environmental Protection Agency – San Francisco, The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Security Pacific National Bank – Los Angeles & San Francisco, The Contemporary Museum, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

He received the Individual Artist Fellowship from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and is part of several books.

Doug is married to an artist-sculptress with two young daughters and has been a full time artist since 1973.

Doug’s exhibit at the Laser Eye Center of Hawaii featured nearly 30 works of art, ranging from Hawaiian flowers and plants to nostalgic landmarks such as the Hawaii Theatre, Haleiwa Theatre and Kuhio Grill. His artwork provided visually-pleasing art pieces for our patients and staff to enjoy. Doug is one of Hawaii’s most popular artists and also one of our own patients.
