The Laser Eye Center of Hawaii is proud to have featured works of art from the advanced painting class of Iolani Upper School from November 1, 2003 through January 16, 2004. The featured art was based on the abstract style of Russian artist, Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky is considered to be the founder of abstract art. Iolani art teacher, Judi Wigren-Slack wanted her students to experience first hand the difficulty of painting in an abstract style. “To many who do not paint, abstract paintings appear 'easy.' However, to paint a successful one was something that my students discovered to be very challenging. They know now that painting in this style takes planning, thought and experience,” says Mrs. Wigren-Slack, who has been teaching Art at Iolani School for 9 years. The faculty of the Art Department at Iolani School believes that all students have the ability to express themselves in a visually literate manner and that they are all capable of mastering the basic tools that make this possible. Their philosophy is that the student who has experienced success in non-verbal communication and expression is a student who can adapt to any environment. These skills enable strategic thinking and creative problem solving, competencies necessary for success in today’s world. The Laser Eye Center of Hawaii was very pleased with the response received from showcasing the works of these young artists. Many were surprised to discover the artists to be high school students. It was both refreshing and rewarding to see. The paintings truly reflect the enthusiasm, talent, and hope of youth. |
