The Evaluation Process A thorough eye exam will be performed by one of our participating doctors to determine if you are a candidate for the laser vision correction procedure. Outcomes are historically best in patients with stable vision. For this reason, the Laser Eye Center of Hawaii recommends that you be at least 21-years of age and have stable vision for the past two years. You should generally be in good health and free from any collagen vascular diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc.) or eye diseases. You should not be pregnant or nursing or planning to become pregnant in the next six months. For contact lens wearers, your doctor will provide you with a schedule to discontinue wearing your contact lens prior to the procedure. In general, you should not wear soft contact lenses one week prior to a pre-operative examination. If you wear hard or gas permeable lenses, you should discontinue wearing your lenses for at least six weeks. Once you are confirmed to be a good candidate for laser vision correction treatment, you will be educated on all aspects of the laser vision correction procedure by watching a short, informative video and have the opportunity to ask any questions. It is important for you to learn as much as you can about PRK or LASIK, and have all your questions answered. This will ensure you are making an informed decision and you know what to expect from the procedure.
