Rei Matsuo, Artist

Born in 1929 in Tochio City, Niigata, Rei Matsuo began painting in 1980, just before the age of 51, under the tutelage of Yuriko Tanaka.  Matsuo's children had grown and she discovered great joy in self-expression through painting.

Over the years, her works have delighted visitors at various exhibitions in Niigata.  Niigata is a prefecture of Japan located on the west side of Honshu Island on the coast of the Sea of Japan.  The capital is the city of Niigata.  The name Niigata literally means “New Lagoon” and is a popular destination for its hot springs and skiing.

In 2003 Matsuo opened a gallery named Atelier Rei in Niigata with the goal of revitalizing the arts and showcasing the works of local artists.  Subsequently, the gallery was handed over to her successor so that she could once again concentrate on her own creative works.  She continues to display her works in various private and local art exhibitions held predominantly in Niigata City where she resides.
