Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth, Rikiya "Riki" Asai showed an innate passion for painting when he was between four and five years of age. The Honolulu resident's award-winning abstract and floral works have been exhibited throughout Japan and California and featured in a series of books.
Riki's mother, Miwako Asai says he began painting after he spotted a watercolor set at a toy store and insisted on bringing it home. Unable to speak at the time, he would not part with it. It was the first time he showed such an interest in something. Unable to hold the brush at first, he started painting with the implement taped to his hand. People started to ask for the name of the artist who created the paintings she began hanging at home and where they were purchased.
Mlwako Asai says Riki paints from an exuberant soul despite his physical challenges. Though limited in his ability to talk or walk, Asai says Riki is infinitely happy by nature. She believes Riki is very special because he brings strength and encouragement to people from all walks. "Please don't be sorry for him," she says. Asai and those who know his work believe Riki has a divine power to communicate messages of hope and joy through the universal language of his art.
